MEER BOMEN NU

In 2020, Urgenda began the Meer Bomen Nu campaign as saplings - the babies of trees and bushes - are being removed from forests and thrown into the shredder. Saplings tend to be cut away due to regular forest management as there is either an overabundance of one species or to make way for ground plants or other uses. Urgenda believes that transplanting these wasted saplings can be the solution to decelerate climate change, restore biodiversity and have a positive impact on neighbourhoods. With their campaign, Urgenda hopes to plant one million trees across the Netherlands and create a new green economy not based on money, but one based on putting nature first. With the Meer Bomen Nu method, saplings are not shredded but are being transplanted with the help of volunteers and municipalities. They can either be replanted directly at a new location or at a tree hub where they can be stored before being planted elsewhere. Last season the campaign already successfully replanted half a million saplings through this method with the help of almost 2.500 volunteers and this year they aim for planting 1 million saplings.
