About.

"The aim of a living lab is to develop, try and test an innovative urban solution in a real-life context" (Steen &  van Bueren, 2017).

In this research we use a living lab approach, because the problem is complex, innovation is needed and it takes place in the Amsterdam region.

This living lab is the result of the Master's program in Metropolitan Analysis Design & Engineering (a collaboration between TU Delft and Wageningen Univeristy) at the AMS Institute in Amsterdam.

The case that is tackled in this living lab comes fromThe Rainbow Group

The Regenboog Group is an organization that offers help to all Amsterdammers who need it, including Economic Homeless. "An economically homeless person has an acute housing demand; This has arisen due to life-changing events such as unemployment, illness or divorce; An economically homeless person is (financially) self-reliant; Serious psychological problems and addiction are not an issue" (NOS,2022).

The case that we as a group of students received from The Rainbow Group is:

"Ukrainian refugees are warmly welcomed in the Netherlands. It is striking that a lot has been made possible in a short period of time: for example, you can take a refugee from Ukraine into your home without your benefits being cut. And it is suddenly possible to quickly apply for a permit. for a garden shed. Real estate parties are also making an inventory of office buildings that can be converted into buildings with residential units. How is all this possible and how can we use these possibilities for other groups of house seekers?"

Issue:

"Societal stigma, and the lack of flexibility in permits, streamlined processes and communication, and national urgency contribute to the complexity of securing temporary housing for the economically homeless population in Amsterdam, compared to temporary housing for Ukrainian refugees."

Target:

"the goal of our research is to build a framework for the temporary housing process for The Rainbow Group to efficiently navigate the housing system for the economically homeless based on the lessons learned from the temporary housing for Ukrainian refugees."

We are a group of four master students at the AMS institute. We all have different educational backgrounds, but we share an interest in tackling social issues. For this reason, we have been working in recent months to alleviate the problems of housing the economically homeless.
