Process

To structure the Living Lab process, the approach by Steen and Van Bueren (2017) is used. With the help of interviews, observations, surveys, market research, stakeholder analyses, literature research and co-creation sessions, requirements for a circular cup system in ARTIS were analysed and discussed. Next, a suitable cup system was chosen based on the found criteria and tested in a restaurant in ARTIS during a two-week pilot. After this pilot, the system was evaluated and refined during a co-creation session with the involved stakeholders. Based on these results, guidelines for a circular cup system in ARTIS could be developed.

Co-creation

After the plan development, the Living Lab in ARTIS started with defining criteria for a sustainable drinking cup system together with the main identified stakeholders. Next to literature research, we conducted interviews and surveys with visitors in ARTIS,  members of the management department from ARTIS, and members of the management department of the Vermaat Group (catering provider) to analyze their expectations for a suitable cup system in ARTIS. The results suggested that a drinking cup system in ARTIS should be aimed at 'reuse', as this fits the defined circularity goals. Moreover, a reusable system can have a clear educational purpose that matches ARTIS' goal to include visitors in its journey towards sustainability. Therefore, the decision was made to continue the Living Lab with a reusable cup system.

Next, we performed market research on the available reusable cup systems that complied with the set criteria for sustainable drinking cup systems. Two criteria clearly limited the possibilities, namely the maximum proximity of the supplier of reusable cups to ARTIS and the availability of an external washing system. Based on this analysis, four companies turned out to be suitable. In a co-creation session, these four companies and their accompanying cup systems were compared by the General Manager of the Vermaat Group, the ARTIS manager Public & Experience and the ARTIS Sustainability Coordinator. Additionally, the initial set-up of the reusable drinking cup system in ARTIS was designed with the stakeholders. Agreements were made to set up a pilot for the reusable drinking cup system, as well as the establishment of a temporary collaboration with GreenCups.

Implementation

From the 15th until the 26th of November, (excluding the weekend) the pilot with the reusable cup system took place in restaurant De Waterkant. GreenCups was responsible for the delivery, pick-up and sanitation of the cups. By implementing the reusable system, the overall circularity, user desirability, and technical- and business feasibility could be tested. By using surveys and interviews we received feedback on the tested system from the visitors, employees and all other involved stakeholders.

When the pilot was finalised, all results were processed and evaluated during another co-creation session with the involved stakeholders. Based on the insights from this evaluation, a set of guidelines that ARTIS could use when implementing a circular cup system in the park is formulated.
