Meet the team

We are Laureen, Sarah and Elsemieke, three students from the Metropolitan Analysis Design Engineering (MADE) Master's degree. From September until December 2021, we have done research in the development of guidelines for a reusable drinking cup system in ARTIS. Our backgrounds lie in International Land and Water Management, Architecture and Industrial Design Engineering. Due to these different backgrounds and views, we could approach the project in ARTIS in a multidisciplinary way.

Project insights

As a team, we learned how to cope with a variety of stakeholders that all reacted differently when being confronted with a change in the normally quite rigid system of drinking cups. We had to adapt to stakeholders, their agenda, and other changing situations daily, which taught us that a flexible approach in these kinds of projects is key. The pilot was postponed and almost even cancelled a couple of times. Due to perseverance, teamwork and the help of our coach and case owner, the pilot could continue, and we were able to show that there is a way to produce less waste in ARTIS with a circular cup system. Because of the corona measures, the low season period in which the pilot was held and the short time frame of this project, the pilot results are not fully representative. Therefore, we recommend ARTIS to perform more tests with reusable cups in the future. For now, we set the first small steps in turning the leisure industry into a sector in which circularity is the standard, and it is up to ARTIS and the Vermaat Group to use these results and increase the impact beyond their borders.
