The E-scooter

E-scooter Potential

Light, small and agile. E-scooters are one of the new mobility innovations seen in many cities all over the globe. Either privately owned or emplyed through a shared free-floating system, the e-scooter moves people around in urban areas.

In many different European countries, e-scooters are found, but in the Netherlands they are yet to be introduced.

A letter sent by the Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and Water management to the parlement elaborated on a new framework for approving light electrical vehicles on the dutch roads for the year 2023.

This roll-out should however not take place without learning lessons from roll-outs in cities around the globe.

Abroad, this outroll already took place and led to many problems due to it not being regulated. With scooters blocking sidewalks, increased cluttering of the public space and dangerous traffic situations, many problems arose. Especially in the cramped inner city of Amsterdam, there is no room for additional vehicles like e-scooters to be randomly parked on the sidewalks. Therefore, an alternative to free-floating e-scooters is researched during this living lab
