Making 'smart' use of roofs, by using them more extensively, can have  massive benefits for the city.

About

ABOUT US

We are four MADE-master students from the AMS institute located on the Marineterrein in Amsterdam. MADE stands for  ‘Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering’. Our program is focused on solving complex metropolitan problems and is a collaboration between the TU Delft and Wageningen university. We worked on a project about smartroofs. In our search for a project case as part of our research, we connected with Aedes Real Estate since they have experience with smartroofs and are investigating the integration of a smartroof in their project Amstel 111.

“Our goal is to make a smart use of roofs in Amsterdam,
resulting in a more climate-adaptive city while increasing social well-being”

PHASES

The Living Lab Smartroofs aims to give substance to the final roof design of Amstel 111, in which the red component (social function) is added to a smartroof. To achieve this goal, a Program of Requirements (PoR) has been drawn up. This PoR has been drawn up together with the neighbourhood so that the health and well-being of the local residents is improved.

The process of this living lab, to get to this final product, consisted of four phases:

Plan development phase

In the plan development phase we set up three methods.

01

Literature

The literature review, grounded in the theoretical framework, is conducted to get a better understanding of multiple concepts and theories related to the transition towards smart roofs. The theory is subdivided in three thematic themes: the Living Lab theory, Theory of Change, and Theory on Health & Well-being.

02

Interviews

The goal of the interviews is to explore general concepts and context or to develop case specific concepts and understand local context, depending on the phase and interviewees. Gradually through the different phases, the interview set-up changes from unstructured to semi-structured.

03

References

To get a better understanding of roofs, different roofs in the world had been analysed. To analyse roofs in more depth and to understand the real life usage of roofs, 8 roofs in Amsterdam have been visited.

Exploration phase

In the exploration phase we added two differetn methods, to understand the values of the neighbourhood

The documentary

The documentary was made to create an understanding of the Living Lab, the project Amstel 111 and its stakeholders. The documentary touches upon different concepts such as the social cohesion of the neighborhood and the innovation of smartroofs.

Door-to-door

To build trust with the neighbourdhood, we went door-to-door. We tried to create common language and invite them to our co-creation session

Development phase

Transform data and information into knowledge and idea

01

Co-creation

The co-creation session was set up for the residents. In this session we aimed to obtain a list of possible elements for the roof design and understand the values behind this.

02

Survey

Due to a lack of response in the co-creation session, a survey was made to reach more people.   In this survey participants were asked about their favorite elements and the personal values of health and wellbeing

Translation phase

Finally, in the development phase we created our product and made the report. Together withe the other MADE Living Labs we created these websites, masterclasses and exhibitions.
