ABOUT
Improving urban livability by transforming flat roofs
Why this project?
The Flat Roof Revolution project came about to show the enormous potential of using flat rooftops to create more liveable cities. Using rooftop space can be an answer to current issues such as climate change, housing shortage, and the energy transition.
For whom?
We hope that our project will be used as a guide to set ambitions and make balanced choices in the rooftop transition. The guidelines described in the Daken Draaiboek booklet can be applied to any location. We would like to share our knowledge and inspire everyone in any position related to roofs. We provide the tools to do so.

DAKEN DRAAIBOEK
The Daken Draaiboek provides guidelines for the whole process of initiating a design process for multifunctional rooftops, including stakeholder management, decision making, and next steps. Furthermore, a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) model has been used to aid in the decision-making process. It is the bridge between the stakeholders’ wishes and the development team. There are a total of 16 criteria and 13 rooftop alternatives, with each weight representing the wishes and aspirations of the stakeholders, as identified from interviews, co-creation sessions, and/or policy documents. The criteria are correlated and are part of an interconnected system. The roof typologies are usually overlapping, therefore the outcome of the MCDA is a ranking of the best types of roofs but does not represent a definitive choice. Below you can download our Daken Draaiboek and our MCDA model.

We also made a booklet for the Dapperbuurt in order to inspire people to take action and to see what possibilities there are in the neighborhood. Changing the rooftop landscape begins with each of us first knowing what's possible, what we want, and what the best solution is. Let yourself be inspired and see how we applied our methodology to a location in Amsterdam. Download the booklet (in Dutch) below.

LIVING LAB
The living lab approach is used to find what new function can be given to the rooftops in Dapperbuurt, Amsterdam, to resolve pressing problems in the neighborhood. The process we followed can be applied at any location, as it is designed to be scalable and replicable. The Flat Roof Revolution living lab is used in socially sustainable and urgent problems that ask for a transformative, transdisciplinary process including different stakeholders.
Any multifunctional rooftop has a unique character and requires a creative design approach. Because of the diverse study domains involved (environmental, technical, social, economic), because of different stakeholder values and wishes, and because of the possible conflicts of interest between them, we identified this to be a wicked problem. Therefore, there is no universal cure for the problem we are targeting, yet our inclusive, open, and fair approach represents a big step forward towards the large-scale adoption of multifunctional rooftops.
Having a living lab approach allowed us to explore our research questions in-depth and to interact with our stakeholders in a valuable, personal manner. Research bounded in a laboratory would have provided us with relevant technical performance research, yet our living lab paved the way toward social research, system analysis, and stakeholder mapping. The methods we used in the co-creation sessions, together with our integrated approach with regards to designing a multifunctional rooftop, proved to be a valuable insight that initiated new lines of thought.
